Yes, Virginia, There is Still an America

The satiric site the Babylon Bee, found it necessary to start a second online site, Not the Bee. As serious pronouncements by politicians, academicians, and celebrities become increasingly outlandish, too often what the Bee writes of as humorous becomes real news a short time later. Hence, Not the Bee, where absurd but true news is published.

I came home from a business trip that included a wonderful afternoon at Dave Ramsey’s campus in Tennessee to find a Washington Examiner magazine in the mail. This conservative-leaning magazine was full of news that at one time might have been featured in the Babylon Bee and would now be found in their ‘real news’ edition.

One report was of a growing trend on social media for women to explain why they do not do anything for their husbands. He can cook his own meals and do his own laundry! After all, being a wife does not equate with being a domestic laborer.

Another article featured the dating app, Bumble, running an ad that said, “You know full well a vow of celibacy is not the answer. Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun.” Millions of women (thankfully) did not respond with, “Sign me up!”

Then there was the Biden administration redefining sex and thereby gutting women’s sports and safety; the Biden administration’s insistence that we are all doing great economically; and the conviction and sentencing of a 53-year-old black man with no criminal history for an alleged gun crime where the Judge told the gentleman’s attorney, “…you can’t argue Second Amendment. This is New York.” I could list more.

I am blessed to be surrounded by sane family and friends. Our larger circle of Happy Warriors tells me that we are not alone. In the Atlanta airport, while snaking through the TSA line, a woman behind me in line, one whom campus elites tell you should be an enemy of mine, tentatively said, “Are you Rabbi Lapin’s wife?” When I answered in the affirmative, she told me how our Ancient Jewish TV show inspired her. (I even do his laundry and cook meals for him!)

Not being on TikTok, Instagram, or other social media choices means that I don’t see the most extreme and outrageous viewpoints. At times that makes me naive, but mostly it keeps me healthy. Leftist extremists count on repetition, intimidation, and bullying to force their viewpoints on others. Sadly, young people are especially susceptible to irrational and warped viewpoints. Nonetheless, traveling as I did last week to and through three states, taking a flight where both staff and passengers were cooperative and helpful, and seeing the huge Ramsey operation filled with hard-working, cheerful, and productive employees, many of them young, provided a reminder to be optimistic and grateful for the large number of people who are keeping lit the flame of civilization.

This Musing is dedicated in memory of Daniel Ohana, age 24, who was murdered by Hamas terrorists while attending the Supernova music festival. Daniel’s girlfriend was also shot and killed by terrorists, while her sister was shot but managed to pull herself into nearby bushes and survived.

Daniel’s sister wrote, “I close my eyes and remember your voice, your rolling laughter and the tears start to come. You were such an optimistic person, you were so special.”

And with prayers for the safe release of the remaining hostages and among them we pray will be Ori Danino, age 25. Ori was at the Supernova music festival and drove some of the attendees to safety in his car. He then went back to get more people and was captured and taken to Gaza.
