I’m 29-years-old living in Korea. I read your book Thou Shall Prosper and I’m your fan. I have a question about finding job and concentrating studying. I took test for my graduation. But I failed for many times so I think I’m stupid and it feel like I can’t do anything. And I’m working as part time job. The main question is how do I concentrate or focus on studying?
T.K.K.
Dear T.K.K.,
We are somewhat handicapped in answering your question as we imagine that there might be cultural nuances that we do not understand. Please forgive us if our answer isn’t applicable to your situation because of those factors.
We wonder if your main question is truly how to improve your study skills and concentration. That may be so and a quick internet search turns up dozens of papers and videos giving advice for doing so. Perhaps more important is asking how to build your persistence and perseverance.
It is devastating to fail repeatedly. It might be that another path which doesn’t require such a test is a better avenue for success. If, however, the test is your only pathway and is essential for moving ahead with a more successful life, then before you can utilize study skills, you have to radically change your image of yourself. If you think you are stupid, then it becomes almost impossible for you to act smart.
It is possible that like many financially successful people, you are not a good test taker or a good academic. That need not impede you on your road to prosperity.
The ability to be knocked down and get up over and over is what distinguishes the successful salesman, scientist, author and actor from the “wannabes.” One of the most prolific scientists in U.S. history, Thomas Edison, said, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”
We recommend that in addition to taking practical steps, you ask yourself what your talents are and give yourself time to appreciate those strengths. Lay out tasks to accomplish each day and celebrate when they are done. Whatever hard work lays ahead of you, ask God to support you and show gratitude to Him for the gifts He has given you. Berating yourself only sinks you into a cycle of failure.
We look forward to hearing good things,
Rabbi Daniel and Susan Lapin
