I Can’t Go into Sales

I have a problem: An increase in income would be a good thing. In a number of places you have recommended sales as a good field.

The problem is that I am classified as “low vision” due to AMD, so operating a motor vehicle is prohibited. I have a long-range electric scooter that enables me, in fair weather, to get about. Filling out forms, orders, etc., is difficult and slow.

Probably I’m not the only one in such a situation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do keep busy writing for a pro-life organization and for my own email list.

Dear Don,

We could begin our answer by sympathizing with you as you face a serious challenge with your limited sight. We are not going to do so. Not because our heartstrings aren’t tugged, but because, rather than pity, we think you need a fire lit beneath you.

Your opening sentence tells us a great deal. While you are correct that we do encourage sales as a field that offers limitless opportunity (and this week are running a Masterclass on how to become good at it), we also consistently deliver another message. That is: focus on what you can do for others and not on the money you need or want. Of course, more money would be helpful. That is true for most of us. But other people deliver money to you when you deliver value to them. Stop concentrating on getting more money and instead home in on what you can sell that would be helpful to your customers.

Your second paragraph cites your physical limitations. Nowhere do we see you telling us of your abilities. Do you have a sharp mind? A pleasing manner? Understanding of specific fields? What assets do you bring to someone who might give you a chance to sell his products or resources?

We encourage you to become a problem solver instead of a problem lister. Is filling out forms difficult for you? There are any number of technical work arounds you can employ, and you can also pay someone to help you. You have limited mobility? The phone and the computer allow communication without running around town. Sit down and fill out a list of ten more ways to expand your reach rather than feeling sorry for yourself.

Finally, all of us should do some volunteer work. Giving is a wonderful thing. But it is not a replacement for spending time earning money. It is the cherry on top, not the sundae, if you get our drift. Don’t use generosity of time and effort as an excuse not to be responsible for yourself. (You might wish to do a search in previous Ask the Rabbi columns for ‘volunteer’ to see more on this topic.)

Don, now that we have been perhaps a bit harsh, we will acknowledge our sympathy for the difficulties you face. One of the first blessings we say each morning thanks God for the gift of sight. It is a precious thing to lose. May He be by your side as you navigate a joyous and grateful existence while accepting the obstacles He has placed before you.

Looking to the future,

Rabbi Daniel and Susan Lapin
